One of the greenest and most environmentally friendly projects that Alex Von Furstenberg got himself involved with, is the preservation of an old structure called the High Line. This edifice was originally a 1930 railroad that separated the freight trains from the busy streets of New York City. Despite its benefits to the economy and the people of the city, the said location has been abandoned, and it was once on the point of being demolished. However, there have been concerned citizens who wanted to keep the place intact and make it a greener place while keeping the legacy on its railroads alive.
This motive was the start of the establishment of the group called Friends of the High Line, where Alex Von Furstenberg is a current member of the board of directors. He joined this non-profit organization with the purpose of promoting green living in urban places, such as New York. The concept was unique, the design was amazing, and the vision is clear. Mr. Furstenberg became attracted with the project, which made him donate some funds to support the sustaining of operations, licensing, and maintenance of the said park, a part of the 70% of funds that are used annually, where 30% is funded by the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation.
Alex Von Furstenberg is not just a member of this group because of his interest in it. He wanted to experience, firsthand, the preservation of the industrial heritage, history, and seeing that the charm of the High Line will be kept even in the next generation. He is one of the many friends who show a statement that even abandoned places can still be used and changed into an area that provides environmental benefits to cities that are brimming with urban activity.
As a friend of the High Line, Mr. Furstenberg is also responsible for thinking of ways on how the park would look better with design concepts and innovation that can be applied on the park’s premises. Ever since the group was established in 1999, the High Line went through extensive repair, conceptualization, planning, construction, development, and modernization, which Alex Von Furstenberg has been a part of doing. The whole project lasted for more than 7 years, but the results of the team effort of over 30 businessmen and women, including construction groups, where a stunning success. This place now serves as one of the cleanest and safest places in New York City
